YOUR OWN SUCCESS
We all
know how it is. Raised in a society, a community where education is rife and
very important. You have parents, relatives, leaders and role models who carry
similar opinion about education, success and career. Right from your younger
days, you’d listened to these influential people, admired their successes, at
times wished to be in their shoes and you listened very carefully to their
counsel and advise on education, courses, career and how you could succeed as
well in life.
Based on
their counsel you got into school, became very committed and hardworking; never
took your school work for granted. As much as you had fun in school, you knew
when and how to draw the line. Your future; very important to toy with, and
based on counsel and of course public perception you embarked on your life’s
journey in a particular career.
Truth
is, many of us today are not truly happy with our lives in career. This deep
rooted secret unhappiness has nothing to do with where we work or even our
income. It’s purely based on a subconscious awareness that there is something
missing in our lives.
You see,
too many of us are not happy with even our world class jobs and prestigious
careers. Many practicing doctors, lawyers, engineers, accountants, architects,
bankers, oil company employees and those we believe are at the top in their
professions and career are not truly happy inside.
I’m not
saying all of them, most of them. When you see them happy, that happiness is
most likely not derived from their profession, practice or their fantastic
well-paying employment, their happiness most times is based on reputation and
income. It’s how people admire them and the reward that makes them happy not
the job.
The
respect and the money that their professions and employment type bring is what makes them happy. Many
medical practitioners for example are not happy with what they do, they only
smile when they are honoured and respected by people as doctors. The respect
they get from the public and the money they are paid for their practice is what
makes them happy, not the job of medical practice. This applies to many
professionals as well. They are not happy about what they do, they are
motivated by respect and reward.
Dear
friend, pause for a moment and ask yourself, are you really happy about your
employment. Are you excited, thrilled and inspired by your daily duties? When
you wake up and head out to your office every week day, is it the work that
bring you excitement or the reward in salary and remuneration that keep you going?
No
matter how fantastic your organization is, no matter how prestigious your
profession is, ask yourself this morning, do I like what I do, or I like what
it brings me? Do you enjoy your work or the money, respect and exposure it
brings?
Dear
friends, I’ve been there, I know exactly what I’m talking about. You work with
a multinational, a reputable establishment, your ID card alone opens doors for
you, people respect your; visa to travel come easy; obtaining loans from banks;
easy, even your employers can give you loans to buy a property, a car or
anything you want.
You even
have an official car and a driver. You love and enjoy all that comes with the
employment but the work itself, your daily duties, you don’t really enjoy. Your
work brings you no pleasure only pressure. You’re grumpy, cranky lack
inspiration at work, but keep forcing yourself based on what you stand to gain
if you work hard.
You work
so hard but unhappily, you even win awards, accolades, commendations,
promotions and prize. Everyone applauds you, congratulates you, are happy for
you and think you’re great and lucky employee.
You
smile, you laugh; you pretend you’re enjoying the recognition and appreciation,
but afterwards, you’re alone, the noise is over, the excitement, the clapping,
the congratulations, the music and the recognition event is over, everyone’s
gone home. Then you’re alone, in your car, driving home, all by yourself, no
one with you, you look at the gift, the
laurel and think over the whole event as it were and at that point one truth
stands out still and remains real; it all still didn’t bring the happiness you
want.
Despite
all the great excitement and celebration, there is an emptiness inside and
you’re still looking forward to going back to work the next day. You work doesn’t
make you happy. You’ve found yourself in a mix, you are a victim of public
success but private failure in your career.
Dear
friends, can’t you see it everywhere, isn’t it obvious many people are having
this problem? The quality of customer service and client servicing in Nigeria
is worrisome; abysmal, I must confess. Go to many offices, even in world class
establishments, the security guards are nasty, the receptionists are nasty,
nearly everyone you meet is grumpy, disrespectful and nasty. They do their job
as if they’re doing you a favour. You’re there to spend your money, yet they
treat you with disrespect and disdain.
Visit
many banks today and check out the attitude of the tellers and even customer
service officers, most of them are frowning, disconnected, rude with this
irritating body language. Go to the airport, sea port, public service centres
for documents or information, go to many hospitals, check out the nurses and
many of the doctors, visit eateries, restaurants, including religious organizations
and many worship centres to see the man of God, the treatment is all nasty and
discouraging. Most people manning positions don’t love what they do, don’t
enjoy the work and see their daily duties as stress; in their opinion,
customers are disturbing them, how unfortunate.
Truth
is, it has nothing to do with compensation and reward, no matter the frequency
of salary increases they are still like that; many have this attitude because
they are doing jobs they really don’t like. They are working for profit not for
pleasure, they are not enjoying the work; they are misled and misguided in career.
Dear
friend, I worry about you and really feel bad if for years you’re working for
profit and not for pleasure. You may never know what happiness and fulfillment
is in life and career if this is the case with you.;
In can’t
imagine waking up daily 5 to 10 to 20 years of my life enduring life and career
instead of enjoying life and career. You really wouldn’t know true peace and
happiness until you do daily, what brings you pleasure. Money is not the answer
to happiness, fulfilling purpose is the way to true happiness. Where is your
place in this world?
What
career was tailor made for you by your maker? Different from the counsel of
your parents, mentors and influencers, what do you believe you’re meant to do
in this life? If you’re not doing it, you’re not living well. Dear friend, it’s
time to find your real self and your real career in this world. It’s time to
find happiness. Find your true career, find happiness and more money than you
can spend will naturally follow. Beyond what’s happening around you, find your
own success.
